Example sentences:
1. 彼女が現れるや否や、大勢のファンが取り巻いた。
kanojo ga arawareru ya ina ya, oozei no fan ga torimaita.
As soon as she appeared, many fans surrounded her.
2. ベルが鳴るや否や、学生たちはいっせいに書き始めた。
beru ga naru ya ina ya, gakuseitachi wa issei ni kaki hajimeta.
As soon as the bell rang, the students started writing.
3. 食卓に到着するや否や、彼女が詰め寄った。
shokutaku ni touchaku suru ya ina ya, kanojo ga tsumeyotta.
She cornered me just as I arrived at the dining table.
4. 彼が登場するや否や、会場から割れんばかりの拍手が沸き起こった。
kare ga toujou suru ya ina ya, kaijou kara waren bakari no hakushu ga wakiokotta.
The moment he appeared on stage, the audience burst into thunderous applause.
