Giving and Receiving Verbs in Japanese: くれる, あげる, and もらう
In Japanese, there are two ways to say “to give” depending on whether you are on the giver’s or the receiver’s side.
When you are on the giver’s side, you use the word あげる. So if you want to say something like “I gave my friend a present,” you use あげる.
The other way of saying “to give” is くれる, but it’s used when you’re on the receiver’s side. So to say, “my friend gave me a present,” くれる is the right choice.
