Meaning: try to; attempt to; be about to ~
How to use: Verb (volitional form) + とする / とした/ としたら
Example sentences:
1. うるさい子供たちに物事を説明しようとするとき、いら立ちを感じる。
urusai kodomotachi ni monogoto o setsumei shiyou to suru toki, iradachi o kanjiru.
I feel frustration when trying to explain things to noisy children.
2. お風呂に入ろうとしたら、電話が掛かってきた。
ofuro ni hairou to shitara, denwa ga kakatte kita.
Just as I was about to take a bath, the phone rang.
3. こいつはわざと、おれの怒りをかきたてようとしているんだ。
koitsu wa wazato, ore no ikari o kakitateyou to shite irun da.
He’s deliberately trying to arouse my anger.
4. 彼はこの質問にショックを受けた。それを否定しようとした。
kare wa kono shitsumon ni shokku o uketa. sore o hitei shiyou to shita.
He was shocked by the question. He tried to deny it.
