Common Japanese Honorifics in the JLPT Listening Test

1. お目にかかる ( JLPT 2017, 2019, 2022)
Meaning: To meet (humble form of 会う).
Example:
先生にお目にかかれて、うれしいです。
( せんせいにおめにかかれて、うれしいです。)
I’m very glad to have met you, Professor.
=> Commonly used when the speaker is happy to meet the other person. The other person then replies with こちらこそ (“The pleasure is mine”).
2. いらっしゃる (JLPT 2018, 2019, 2022, 2024)

( しゃちょうはもうおかえりになりました。)
The president has already gone home.
4. ご存じです (JLPT 2018)

6. ご~ください (JLPT 2023)
Meaning: Please do V (polite request). Structure: お + V (ます-stem) + ください / ご + noun + ください.

Example:
もう一度説明していただいてもいいでしょうか。
( もういちどせつめいしていただいてもいいでしょうか。)
Could you please explain it one more time?
=> To translate this pattern correctly, check what form the main verb is in → V-て form → the sentence means “asking someone to do something for you.” The いただいてもいいでしょうか part is just decoration, so don’t worry when you see it on the exam ^^
9. Vていただけないでしょうか (JLPT 2023)
Meaning: Would you be so kind as to do V for me? (extremely polite request)
Example:

( きょうはすこしはやくかえらせていただけないでしょうか。)
Would it be all right if I left a little early today?
=> Put the verb in Vさせて form, then add いただけないでしょうか (very polite).
Note that here the verb is not in plain V-て form (unlike No. 9), so be careful not to mix them up.
Meaning: “May I be allowed to do V?”
11. ~おかわり、いかがですか (JLPT 2019, 2022)
