1. Particle が (ga)
N が あります/ わかります and N が 好きです/ 嫌いです/ 上手です/ 下手です
Noun ga arimasu / warimasu and Noun ga suki desu / kirei desu / jouzu desu / heta desu.

The object of a transitive verb is marked with を.

However, objects of the verbs あります and わかります are marked with が.

Such adjectives as すきです, きらいです, じょうずですand へたです require objects, and these are marked with が too. The verbs and adjectives whose objects are marked with が are those kinds that describe preference, ability, possession and the like.

わたしはイタリア りょうり が すきです。
Watashi wa itaria ryouri ga suki desu.
I like Italian food.

わたしは日本語がわかります。
Watashi wa nihongo ga wakarimasu.
understand Japanese.

わたしは車 (くるま) があります。
Watashi wa kuruma ga arimasu.
I have a car.

2. どんな N (donna Noun) = what kind ~
Other than the usage you learned in Lesson 8, どんな is also used to ask the listener to name one from a group which the noun after どんな denotes.

どんなスポーツが好きですか。
Donna supootsu ga suki desu
What sports do you like?

… サッカーが好きです。
… sakka ga suki desu.
…I like football.
