4. とても/あまり (totemo/amari)
とても and あまり are adverbs of degree. Both come before the adjectives they are modifying.
とても is used in affirmative sentences, and means “very”. あまり is used in negative sentences. あまりand a negative form means “not very”.

ペキン は とても さむい です
Pekin wa totemo samui desu.
Bejing is very cold.

これ は とても ゆうめい な えいが です
Kore wa totemo yuumei na eiga desu
This is a very famous movie.

シャンハイ は あまり さむくないです。
Shanhai wa amari samukunai
Shanghai is not very cold.

5. Nはどうですか( N wa dou desu ka?)
This question is used to ask an impression or an opinion about a thing, place or person, etc…, that the listener has experienced, visited or met.

日本の せいかつ はどうですか。
Nihon no sekatsu wa dou desuka?
How is life in Japan?

…たのしいです。 …It’s enjoyable.

6. N1 はどんな N2 ですか
When the speaker wants the listener to describe or explain N1, this question pattern is used. N2 denotes the category N1 belongs to. The interrogative どんな is always followed by a noun.

なら(奈良) は どんな まちですか。
Nara wa donna machi desu ka?
What kind of town is Nara?

ふるい まちです。
Furui machi desu.
…It’s an old town.

7. S1 が、S2 = but
がis a conjunctive particle, meaning “but”.It is used to link sentences. Same with でも demo.

日本のたべもの は おいしいですが、たかいです。
Nihon mo tabemono wa oishii desu ga, takai desu.
Japanese food is good but expensive.

8.どれ (dore)
This interrogative is used to ask the listener to choose or designate one from more than two things concretely shown or named.

ミラーさんのかさ は どれ ですか。
Miraa san no kasa wa dore desu ka?
Which is Mr.Miller’s umbrella?

…あのあおい(青い) かさ(傘)です。
…Ano aoi kasa desu.
…That blue one is.
