Japanese toilets have many functions and buttons to operate them, but first you need to know what the Japanese words mean!
Q: What is toilet called in Japanese?
・ Otearai (お手洗い), direct translated to mean “place to wash hands”.
・Toire (トイレ), a casual expression so say “otearai” in business settings.
Q: How to flush toilet in Japan?
Some toilets do not use a standard flush but buttons with words instead. The flush button is indicated with 流す (nagasu).

Japanese Words to Know:
おしり(oshiri): wash for your behind

ビデ: bidet (wash for your front)

やわらか(yawaraka):a gentle wash for your behind

流す(nagasu): flush

止: stop

水勢(suisei):water pressure

位置(ichi):position

低/弱: low/weak (used to adjust the level of water pressure)

高/強: high/strong (used to adjust the level of water pressure)

大/小:full/light flush
