Learn JLPT N1 Grammar: ではあるまいし (dewa arumai shi)
Meaning: it’s not like; it isn’t as if ~
How to use:
Noun + ではあるまいし / でもあるまいし / じゃあるまいし
Explain:
Used in the case of denoting that something is not the thing / thing, or not doing the thing / thing should lead to what should be done / should be like.
Example sentences:
1. まったく、子供じゃあるまいし、これぐらい自分で解決したらどうなんだよ。
mattaku, kodomo ja aru mai shi, kore gurai jibun de kaiketsu shitara dou nan da yo.
Seriously, you’re not a kid anymore, so solve this problem by yourself.
2. 子供ではあるまいし、暗いところが怖いなんて、おかしいね。
kodomo dewa aru mai shi, kurai tokoro ga kowai nante, okashii ne.
He’s not a kid, yet he’s scared of dark places. That’s weird.
3. コンピュータではあるまいしそんな難しい計算はわたしには無理だ。
konpyuuta dewa aru mai shi sonna muzukashii keisan wa watashi ni wa muri da.
I’m not a computer. There’s no way I can do such a difficult calculation.
4. 面接試験は初めてではあるまいし、どうしてそんなに緊張するの？
mensetsu shiken wa hajimete dewa arumaishi, doushite sonna ni kinchou suru no.
It’s not like you are having your first interview, why are you so nervous?
